Whatever you worship, you will ultimately serve. Jesus declared to the Devil His intention to worship His heavenly Father and serve Him only. He refused to cut corners. He was here to change the eternal destiny of the human race for all time. The Father had a game plan, and Christ would one day rule over the kingdoms of the world, at the appointed time. Being eternal, Jesus wasn’t in a hurry.
If you want to overcome the lust of the eyes, make some decisions right now. First, make a decision about sin (see Romans 6:2). Next, make a decision about your goals in life (see Philippians 1:21). Finally, make a decision about your allegiance (see Romans 6:11–14).
In Fireproof, when Caleb finally made a decision against temptation, he got serious. When the flashing ad with a beautiful young girl called to him from the computer, he took the computer, monitor and all, and headed outside. After placing the computer on an outdoor table, Caleb picked up an aluminum bat and smashed the computer and the temptation it held. Out of context, that may seem extreme, but that little box in Caleb’s living room was ruining his life, and Caleb finally got serious enough to make sure the temptation had no more power over him.
The Pride of Life
Finally, Satan appeals to our pride. When Satan comes at Jesus for the knockout punch, he doesn’t hesitate.
So he took Him to Jerusalem, had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. For it is written: He will give His angels orders concerning you, to protect you, and they will support you with their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” And Jesus answered him, “It is said: Do not test the Lord your God.” After the Devil had finished every temptation, he departed from Him for a time. (Luke 4:9–13)
Satan is relentless as he increases the pressure. Don’t overlook where he took our Lord—to the heart of the nation, Jerusalem; to the heart of the city, the temple; to the highest point of the temple, the pinnacle. Jesus loved Jerusalem, and Satan knew that. Jesus would minister in the streets, perform miracles, and weep over its people. The temptation was simple: “Since it’s only a matter of time before You start Your miracle-working business, why not start now?”
The Devil pulled out Psalm 91, knowing the verses would resonate with Christ, “For He will give His angels orders concerning you, to protect you in all your ways. They will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone” (vv. 11–12). Here’s the Devil’s subtle twist: since Jesus was going to live by the Word of God, He should be confronted by the Word of God. Satan put Jesus to a Bible test. “If You won’t use Your miraculous powers to help Yourself, at least let Your Father show You how much He loves You.
